The transfer window slammed shut at the start of this month but Aston Villa are already planning for the future.
It was a productive summer window for Aston Villa, who addressed most of the issues in their squad after the departures of Douglas Luiz and Moussa Diaby.
Unai Emery added seven new players to his ranks and the most eye-catching was Amadou Onana’s £50 million move from Everton, with the Belgian powerhouse starting his Villa career in some style by scoring three goals in five appearances.
For all of the positive movement in the window, Emery neglected defensive reinforcements, as the Spaniard failed to sign a new centre-back or right-back.

Aston Villa tried to sign Denzel Dumfries this summer
Emery was in the market for a new right-back in the summer to challenge Matty Cash for a place in the starting XI.
The Villans plotted a late move for defender Lutsharel Geertruida from Feyenoord but he instead joined Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig on deadline day.
Geertruida wasn’t the only name prominently linked to the club, as Aston Villa also tried to sign Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries.

Villa were reportedly in pole position to sign Dumfries for £26 million in the middle of June but a move for the Dutchman never materialised.
Emery’s chances of signing Dumfries then took a major blow as the 28-year-old was closing in on a contract at the San Siro last month but as a deal is yet to be agreed, the Villans have fresh hope of landing the ‘incredible’ full-back.

What Monchi is willing to offer to sign Denzel Dumfries
All hope was lost when Fabrizio Romano reported that the Inter right-back had agreed on a new contract, with his current one expiring in 2025.
However, Inter Live state that Monchi has been trying to flatter the player for quite some time and is willing to offer him a huge salary and a starring role in the Villa project.
With the Italian giants confident of tying down Dumfries till the summer of 2027, a move at this stage looks increasingly unlikely.
But if for whatever reason the talented wing-back decides against putting pen to paper, Monchi could use all his tools of persuasion to land one of Europe’s best defenders.
Indeed, that could be the reason why there is a hold up in Dumfries signing a new deal, as he’s assessing his options before committing his future to Inter.
Hopefully, he decides against staying in Italy so Villa have the chance to snap up one of their long-term targets.
