Aston Villa want to find an upgrade on Matty Cash this summer.

According to Daily Mail sports journalist Tom Collomosse, Unai Emery wants to find an upgrade on Matty Cash in this transfer window, with Aston Villa set to launch a search for a new right-back.

Aston Villa are close to securing a deal to sign left-back Marcos Acuna, and are aiming to reach an agreement with Sevilla as soon as possible, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

Once that deal is done, it seems, the Midlands outfit will turn their attentions to strengthening the opposite flank of the their defensive contingent.

Aston Villa committed £16 million bring Cash to Villa Park in 2020. Emery, however, believes that an improved option at right-back is required.

Cash has been a regular for the Villans since his arrival, and made 26 Premier League appearances for the club last season. It would have been more but for a calf injury that saw him sidelined for several weeks.

Aston Villa have doubts over Cash

Cash has impressed at times under Emery, but there must be question marks over whether the 26-year-old is of the standard required to help Aston Villa push on to the next level. He is a reliable player, but as Emery has ambitions to make the club a force in Europe and trophy-contenders again, it may become clear that Cash is being left behind.

Emery is clearly trying to get ahead of that curve.

Aston Villa have already had a busy summer, with the likes of Moussa Diaby, Pau Torres, and Youri Tielemans having joined the club, and Acuna looking set to follow suit.

Even if a new right-back is found, it is likely that Cash will still play an important role this season. Emery will have to rotate regularly, with Europa Conference League football to contend with, and an increase in competition for places could see the Poland international raise his game and retain his starting spot.
