Aston Villa rumours: Star could depart before deadline day

Despite the Premier League season already being underway, Unai Emery is still aiming to upgrade Villa’s squad.

Transfer deadline day takes place on Friday, giving the Villa manager limited time to make his final transfers.

However, as well as potential incomings, departures are also likely. One player who has been tipped to leave Villa is Diego Carlos.

Fulham did make a bid for Carlos earlier this month but his potential transfer to the capital is believed to be dead.

Yet, in the next few days, Carlos could still depart. Speaking on the 1874 podcast, The Athletic’s Gregg Evans voiced concerns about the potential sale of Carlos, as he explained: “It’s a strange one with Carlos isn’t it, because in the Arsenal games last year he was impressive, wasn’t he.

“He hasn’t done too much wrong, really, in a Villa shirt. I think he’s performed quite well and I think it would be quite hard actually for Villa to go out and buy another centre-half who would be better than Diego Carlos.

“I feel like him not coming on [for Matty Cash against Arsenal] – or not featuring in the last game – was a sign really of where he’s at.”

Throughout the summer, Emery has overseen plenty of new signings at Villa Park.

Most notably, the midfield has seen additional reinforcements after the departure of Douglas Luiz to Juventus. Amadou Onana was the most high-profile signing, joining the club from Everton.

Now, before the window slams shut, Emery wants to prioritise one position. This week, it is believed that the manager wants to bring in an additional attacker to Villa.

The club have already lost out on Joao Felix who joined Chelsea. Raheem Sterling was also linked to Villa, however, this deal now also seems unlikely.

According to Charlotte Duncker of The Times, she said: “Villa have already had a productive window, bringing in seven players to add strength in depth as they compete in the Champions League, and ideally they would like to add more this week.

“Having missed out on João Félix, another attacker is still on the wish list, but sources distanced the club from a move for Raheem Sterling.”

On top of potential attacking additions, Villa’s defence could also be reinforced this week.

Matty Cash is out on the sidelines which may encourage the Birmingham outfit to dip into the market ahead of their Champions League campaign.

One named linked is Lutsharel Geertruida who is a Dutch international for Feyernoord.

It has been reported that talks are ‘active’ between the two clubs with Emery keen to get the deal done.
