George Boateng has praised Aston Villa youngster and rising star Josh Feeney on Instagram after he penned a new contract at the club.

The 18-year-old joined Aston Villa back in 2021 from Fleetwood Town and he has since played for the club’s younger age groups, as well as representing England juniors.

When it was announced, via Villa’s official website, that Josh Feeney has extended his stay at the Premier League side, he took to his Instagram account to express his delight.

The ball-playing centre-back wrote ‘absolutely delighted’ to have signed a new five-year contract at the club, with several players congratulating him in the comments sections.

Former Villa player and academy coach George Boateng also offered his thoughts by telling Feeney that he has a ‘great future’ ahead of him in the game.

Now to push for the first-team

That’s the next step for Feeney and there are many top, top players currently at Villa that he can look towards in order to take his game to the next level.

Tyrone Mings is an England international and one of Villa’s most important players. Ezri Konsa has been one of his side’s most consistent performers since joining the club in 2019, whilst Diego Carlos has played in the Champions League for Sevilla.

Then there is the club’s new face – Pau Torres – a Europa League winner with Villarreal and a Spain international, he has been one of the most underrated players in La Liga in recent years.

Just watching these guys go about their business, both on and off the field. Training with them on a daily basis, will get the best out of Feeney and ensure he takes the right steps to one day become a first-team player.

For now, he is still biding his time and it will be interesting to see if he is loaned out this summer because the time might now be right to see what he is all about in the tough, gruelling and hard-hitting league of EFL football.

The Championship is too much of a jump right now, but perhaps playing for a League One or League Two team might be the right call, or even re-joining his former club Fleetwood Town for a season.
