Monchi has been discussing his time with Aston Villa so far and the reasons why he joined the club in the first place.

The Spaniard joined the club in June from Sevilla where he had operated in a director of football role for many years.

For the Villains he will report to the owners, Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, all while having responsibility with Unai Emery to run the club.

He began his role as director in Seville following his retirement as a player. Sevilla went on to win seven Europa Leagues, a Spanish Cup and two Super Cups during his tenure.

In 2017, he joined Roma as their sporting director in 2017 and after spending two years with the Italians he returned to Sevilla.

Since joining Villa have gone on to make several high-profile signings, which he will have played a part in directly.

What has Monchi said?

For a man who has only spent two years of his career away from Sevilla, a move to Villa could have been difficult.

This didn’t appear to be the case: “The adaptation to a new city, new club, new team-mates has all been very quick and easy since everyone has tried to facilitate in this initial period.

“The feelings of these first few months have been magnificent.”

Emery has worked with Monchi before from his successful spell with Sevilla and as a result, they have a great relationship.

On the Villa boss, he said: “The presence of Unai has been almost the decisive reason to come to Birmingham.

“He is currently one of the top-level coaches in the world of football, with an infinite capacity to work and an eagerness to continue growing.”

Some Villa fans are unsure what the title of ‘President of Football Operations’ means, which Monchi was keen to explain.

“Fundamentally, my work, together with Damian Vidagany, will be to support the needs and everything that involves the first team.”

Damian Vidagany is Aston Villa’s Director of Football Operations and works closely with Monchi.

“As well as directing and coordinating the sporting side of the club, following the economic guidelines set by Nassef and Wes, as owners of the club, who will also be responsible for the development of the club.”

It is clear that the Spaniard is having a large effect on the way the club is moving forward on the pitch and Villa have done well to acquire a man with such credentials.
