Former Aston Villa man, Chris Sutton has backed Emi Martinez as he has suggested that he is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.

After a great first half of the season for Aston Villa, there has been plenty of praise from the media in recent weeks.

With Unai Emery at the wheel, Villa have been in top-class form. This now sees them sitting in second place in the Premier League, at the time of writing.

Many of their stars have been gaining traction for their performances. This has seen Ollie Watkins singled out in recent weeks given that he has nine goals and eight assists this season, according to FotMob.

There has also been praise for Douglas Luiz but in a different sense as his performances have seen him linked with a move away.

Although he has been superb, Emi Martinez has often flown under the radar in the general media for his abilities. That was the case, until now.

Chris Sutton highly rates Emi Martinez

As the Premier League has reached the midway point, there are now discussions of Team of the Year so far. This has seen many players singled out for praise and now it is the turn of Martinez.

Speaking on his football phone in, 606, Chris Sutton has singled out the Argentina international for his performances. This came after his co-host, Robbie Savage had named Ederson as the best keeper in the league.

Sutton disagreed, he said: “Has he been top drawer? I’m going for Aston Villa’s [Emiliano] Martinez. He’s a World Cup winner and I think he’s been the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.”

It is safe to say that Martinez is up there with the best in the league so it isn’t crazy to say that he is the best. With him ranking in the top 98 percentile for three separate stats on Fbref, it is clear that he is one of the world’s best. This is without mentioning that he won the Yashin Trophy this season too.

Consolidating his point, Sutton added: “Hang on a minute. Where are Aston Villa in the league? Look at Aston Villa in this calendar year and they have been an outstanding team, okay? You can have a team full of Manchester City players, that’s fine. I’ve got a few Manchester City players myself. But I think most people would think Martinez is better than Ederson.”

Despite Manchester City being the best team in the world, there has been time’s Ederson has been called into question. That isn’t to say Martinez hasn’t but to say one is clearly better than the other would be unfair.

It is great to see Villa players in these sorts of arguments and with Dibu in goal, Villa are a much better outfit.
