Tyrone Mings is nearing a return to Aston Villa after suffering a year out of action with an ACL injury.

Unai Emery will be delighted to have Tyrone Mings available for selection, as the centre-back has been out of action since the opening day of the 2023/24 calendar.

The Englishman has undergone the gruelling process of recovering from the serious knee injury and is set to return to training at Bodymoor Heath in the coming week.

Aston Villa’s options in defence will be boosted when the 31-year-old is match-ready, as he watched from afar as the Villans beat Athletic Bilbao in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday night.

Tyrone Mings offers opinion on Aston Villa’s stance in the transfer market

Last night, Villa were in action against LaLiga giants Athletic Bilbao, winning 3-2 at the Bescot Stadium in their penultimate friendly of the summer.

Mings was present in his training kit at the game, where he took the time to speak to VillaTV during their live coverage of the fixture.

The defender applauded how his club have developed over the past year during his absence, sharing his admiration for Emery when talking about Villa’s transfer activity.

“What an amazing turnaround and trajectory the club have been on and will continue to be on,” Mings said.

“The manager has been first class, it’s so exciting as a player, for a player thinking of coming to Villa, it’s such an easy sell. Everything is gearing towards being a successful period in Villa’s history.”

Mings’ evaluation of Villa’s progression ahead of the 2024/25 campaign only emphasises the excitement currently around the club.

The Midlands side are preparing to compete in the Champions League for the first time since the 1982/83 season, with Mings certainly eyeing a taste of the action in the year ahead.

Mings shares gratitude to Villa during his time away from the action

Given how much anticipation there was ahead of the 2023/24 calendar, it was heartbreaking to see Mings’ season dismantled by injury.

The centre-back’s campaign lasted just 31 minutes, as he suffered a horrible knee injury on the opening day against Newcastle United.

After overcoming the mental and physical strain of the injury, surgery and recovery, Mings took the time to share his gratitude to Emery and the club for their support.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the manager and his staff while I’ve been injured.

“They’ve been absolutely first class, so thankful for the support they’ve given me, the messages from the fans.

“I’m just looking forward to getting back on the pitch and contributing to successful times here.”

The end is in sight for Mings’ time on the sidelines, with plenty to play for over the 2024/25 calendar, being a player Villa have sorely missed over the past year.
