It’s round number two for Aston Villa and their attempts to appoint a transfer chief to work alongside Unai Emery ahead of his first full season at the club.
From that opening win against Manchester United to securing European football on the final day of the season against Brighton, the job Unai Emery has done at Aston Villa is out of this world.
But the popular Villa figure has been keen to bring a sporting director-like figure to the club. There was previous interest in Barcelona’s Mateu Alemany. Everyone thought it was a done deal, until he turned the Midlands side down at the last minute.

Well, Villa aren’t feeling sorry for themselves because there are now suggestions that they are targeting Sevilla’s brains of transfers – Monchi, as reported by The Daily Mail.
If that’s the case, then it would be some coup from the club because the 54-year-old has quite a reputation in Spain.
La Liga commentator and expert Rob Palmer offered a low down on what Villa would be getting with this possible deal, as he described it as the ‘EPL signing of the summer’ if it goes through, as he posted on Twitter.
Villa aiming to go to the next level
These are just the layers Villa are trying to build as they aim to go to the next level as a football club after years and years of stagnation.
For the fans, those dreaded days in the Championship, those past fears of administration and the abject running of the club are now over.
With Emery in charge, and co-owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens sitting right at the top, there is full belief that they can take the club to levels it hasn’t been in decades.
Returning to Europe is a start, but just a start. Add in Monchi, then Emery has his old song partner to dance with again. And then the layers start to build.
West Ham United’s Europa Conference League win in Prague on Wednesday night is proof to Villa that, come next season, another team in Claret and Blue can be enjoying such success.
