Southampton are eyeing up a move for Aston Villa striker Cameron Archer this summer.

According to The Daily Mail Transfer Confidential, Southampton are interested in Aston Villa forward Cameron Archer.

Archer is certainly a talent, and Unai Emery has previously expressed his desire to keep the player at Villa Park this season. As quoted by Birmingham Live, the Spanish coach said of Archer and fellow Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran, “he’s a player we will need because he is our second striker with Cameron Archer and we have to use both as well and we have to give them chances to help us, but it’s not a possibility for Jhon Duran to go on loan, it’s to stay here.”

However, the player himself may well want more regular football this season than he his likely to get for the Villans. The 21-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan with Middlesbrough in the Championship. He racked up 11 goals in just 20 outings in the second tier.

What next for Cameron Archer?

Having shown he can be prolific at that level, Archer will likely be keen to maintain his momentum. Southampton could represent the ideal destination for him to flourish for an extended period. A loan move could suit all parties, if Emery feels he can cope without the youngster at Aston Villa but doesn’t want to give up on the striker for good.

Southampton could find themselves in dire need of a new goalscorer should Che Adams move on from the club in this transfer window. The south coast side will need a reliable goalscorer if they are to secure an immediate return to the Premier League this season. Archer could find himself with a huge responsibility on his shoulders if he joins the Saints.

If he does stay at Aston Villa, Emery must ensure that he affords the youngster the opportunities that he needs to develop. The Midlands outfit have a huge prospect on their hands in Archer, and his progression needs to be handled with care.

Archer was a member of the England squad that triumphed at the under-21 European Championship this summer, and could be set to take his game to the next level.
