Micah Richards recalls what Aston Villa dressing room really thought of Remi Garde

Some poor managers have walked the Villa Park dugouts over the years.

Tim Sherwood, Roberto Di Matteo, Steve Bruce and Steven Gerrard to name a few.

Di Matteo’s eight per cent win rate lives long in the memory.

Another manager who struggled during his brief stint in the West Midlands was Frenchman Remi Garde.

The 57-year-old, most recently in charge of Montreal Impact, endured an awful 23-game spell during the 2015/16 season.

Garde won just three of his matches at the club, losing 13, and was eventually relieved of his duties just five months after taking the job.

His 13 per cent win rate certainly didn’t endear him to the Aston Villa faithful – and now one of the club’s ex-players has opened up on his tenure.

Micah Richards details Remi Garde changing room incident

The Frenchman potentially lacked the players’ respect and failed to implement his ideas properly at Villa Park.

That’s the view of Micah Richards, who has claimed the Frenchman didn’t have the authority in the West Midlands.

“People always ask me about this. Remi Garde; I’ve maybe been a little bit disrespectful before,” he told the Rest is Football.

“He meant well, and he’s obviously a good coach. You don’t get these jobs if you’re not. What we needed at the time at Aston Villa, he wasn’t the right fit.

“He had an arrogance, but that might not be fair when a manager has come from somewhere and done something, like when Capello came to England. When Remi Garde came into the changing room and did his team talks, people used to nudge me, wanting to laugh.

“He didn’t have the authority that the group needed. Maybe it was just bad timing, but for Aston Villa, he wasn’t the greatest.”

Different Aston Villa nowadays

The current situation at Aston Villa is very different.

Unai Emery is one of Europe’s proven elite managers and is set to take the club to new heights this season.

Champions League football is a distinct possibility, with Villa currently five points clear of Tottenham, who occupy fifth spot.

Up next is a favourable clash against Luton Town. Another three points will see the pressure heaped on Manchester United and Spurs heading into the run-in.
