Liverpool have held internal discussions over the prospect of signing Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

According to reporter Ben Jacobs, speaking to GiveMeSport, Liverpool have talked about the possibility of launching a move for Douglas Luiz, but as yet there has been no formal approach made to Aston Villa.

Despite the recent acquisition of Wataru Endo, Jurgen Klopp may still be keen to add more steel to his midfield contingent, following the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. Luiz certainly has the capacity to shine at Anfield.

However, Aston Villa must do all they can to keep the Brazilian at the club. Unai Emery has previously admitted that the 25-year-old is “very important” to him, and the Spanish coach will be expecting Luiz to be a lynchpin in the middle of the park for the Villans once again this season.

Aston Villa need Luiz this season

Luiz has been a fixture in the team at Villa Park since his £15 million switch from Manchester City in 2019, and has developed into one of the finest defensive midfielders in the Premier League in recent seasons.

His efforts for the Midlands outfit have seen him capped nine times by Brazil, and he was part of the Brazilian squad that won the gold medal at the 2020 summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Luiz has already hit the ground running this season. The Rio de Janeiro-born star converted from the penalty spot to open his account for the campaign during Aston Villa’s recent 4-0 demolition of Everton.

With Aston Villa targeting success in the Europa Conference League this season, alongside maintaining their progress in Premier League terms, they will need Luiz focused and at his best. Emery will be desperately hoping that any talk of a move to Liverpool doesn’t distract the player or turn his head at this late stage in the transfer window.
