Aston Villa are gearing up to face Nottingham Forest at Villa Park, with Unai Emery’s side looking to cement their top-four position.

Tottenham’s defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers saw the Villans jump back into the Champions League places after their impressive 2-1 win over Fulham last time out.

Ange Postecoglou’s men aren’t in action this weekend, which opens the door for Villa to cement their position and heap further pressure on Spurs.

There have been several standout players during the 2023/24 season: Ollie Watkins, Douglas Luiz and Leon Bailey, to name a few.

However, one Premier League star believes John McGinn is the best midfielder he’s faced this season.

James Ward-Prowse makes bold Aston Villa claim

Talking to Sky Sports, James Ward-Prowse was full of praise for the 29-year-old’s brilliant campaign thus far.

“I’ve got one for you. John McGinn. He’s obviously had a really good impact at Aston Villa.

“You try and tackle him, he’s strong, he will get away from you. He’s quick, can pick a pass, and can score a goal.

“He’s a real good player and a big reason why they are where they are. You could easily pick a player from, say, Manchester City, but I like these players who are doing their business well.

Does John McGinn go under the radar?

It’s hard to think of a more well-rounded player when it comes to McGinn.

The Scot’s ability to play in various positions has been a godsend for Emery this season, particularly with Villa’s well-documented injury issues.

The Spaniard deserves immense credit when it comes to McGinn’s superb form.

In November, Emery said (via BeIN Sports): “He is competitive; he is always ready to play, physically as well. When he is not training or playing, he is resting – his energy is always full.

“He is a very good example, of how he is consistent and trying to help and to be an example, a very good example for players.

“I really, really appreciate a lot as a person how he is, but as a professional, he is fantastic.

His connection here, his commitment here for a long time, with the supporters, with Aston Villa, with the project that is here, and he came here when they were in the Championship.

“I think he’s one of the players I really appreciate and really need to be an example for others.”
