Aston Villa have had some class names in the past to grace the Villa Park turf – but there arguably weren’t many better midfielders than Gareth Barry.
Barry spent a whopping 11 years at Aston Villa, making 441 appearances in that timeframe. He also became club captain at Villa Park.
He then completed a £12 million transfer to Manchester City in 2009, before moving on to Everton and West Brom. The midfield general finished his career with one of the most sublime records in all of English football – the most ever appearances in the Premier League, which was 653.
Alas, all good things must come to an end, and Barry retired from professional football at the age of 39 in 2020. However, just four years later, he appears to be back – only this time in the unfamiliar territory of the 11th tier of English football.

Gareth Barry sings for Hurstpierpoint Football Club
On the 22nd of July 2024, Barry came out of retirement – remarkably signing for Hurstpierpoint Football Club, who currently sit pretty in the Mid Sussex Football League, which is the 11th tier of English football.
The club took to X to confirm the signing of the former Villa captain, who at 43 is ready to take on the beautiful game once more.
The statement read: “We are beyond delighted to announce that former England international and all-time Premier League record appearance holder, Gareth Barry, has signed for Hurstpierpoint Football Club.”
The club added: “Gareth has a long-standing association with the village through his good friend, and our coach, Michael Standing; so it seemed an obvious move to get him involved with the football club.
“His quality in training has been unreal, so we’re all very excited to see him pull on the shirt and grace the Fairfield turf later on this season.”
Barry’s illustrious career continues
As if the Englishman hadn’t featured enough on a football pitch – the story isn’t over for the former Premier League champion and Villa legend (despite the Man City betrayal).
He continues his illustrious career with Hurstpierpoint, who are understandably delighted in securing his services.
It certainly adds a different element to his career, as was showcased by his new club, once again on X.
We wish Barry all the best with his next endeavour, but in all honesty, we can’t see him coming back to the English top flight anytime soon!
