Ian Wright was surprised with how Unai Emery set up his Aston Villa side on Sunday, and believes it was a key reason they lost.
Ian Wright was bewildered following Villa’s visit to Anfield as to why he made the decisions he did.
Despite being tipped as a potential top six disruptor this season, Villa have experienced two big losses this season already.
Emery’s decision making in the big games has therefore came under scrutiny by Wright who spoke on the Wrighty’s House podcast.
He explained that he is concerned about Emery’s set-up and the way he played against Liverpool.
A 3-0 defeat which was actually worse than it sounded with a poor performance.

Wright explains his concerns
Speaking of the game, Wright began to query why Trent Alexander-Arnold hasn’t been targeted as a key threat.
“I was very surprised with [Aston] Villa and Unai [Emery]. I cannot believe that the game plan is not to, with someone like Trent Alexander-Arnold, getting tight.
“He must have been the focal point of their team meeting, I can’t see any different because if you’re going to give him time in and around that centre circle, ten yards into his own half, and you’ve got a high line like that with Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, you’re going to get hurt.
“But going the other way, I don’t know what the game plan was, how can you not stop Trent? Just gave Trent the keys.”
Wright therefore thinks playing Villa’s usual game isn’t the way to go when facing top opposition just now, and perhaps w more defence orientated approach is needed.
