Ian Wright calls for Aston Villa trio to be called up by England after strong form

Ian Wright wants Aston Villa trio Ezri Konsa, Jacob Ramsey and Ollie Watkins to be called up for England.

Gareth Southgate will name his squad on Thursday for the upcoming internationals and Wright thinks Aston Villa’s thriving trio deserve their shots, as he posted on Twitter

Ollie Watkins scored a hat-trick against Brighton on Saturday, in front of the watching Gareth Southgate at Villa Park, so he can’t do any more.

He has already earned senior caps for England, whilst Jacob Ramsey and Ezri Konsa are waiting for their maiden call-ups.

For someone like Jacob Ramsey, he was part of the England U21 team that won the European Championships this summer, so he is known to the powers that be.

Whereas Ezri Konsa, despite his consistent form over the years, has never been recognised, which is a disgrace of the highest order.

England calling?

“Can I just say, Ezri Konsa, he now needs to be looked at, in respect of the England squad,” said Wright. “The same with Jacob Ramsey. Get him in there. Let him start to train with those guys. He knows the England set-up.

“And, obviously, Ollie Watkins. That spine in itself, with the goalkeeper. That spine is unbelievable for Aston Villa.”

Open your eyes, Southgate

You feel sorry for Konsa the most because he has been absolute quality for years. He is one of the best one-v-one defenders in the Premier League, yet, despite England’s fragilities at the back, he has never even got a call.

But knowing Southgate, he will probably pick Harry Maguire for the 100th time, even though he is still hardly playing.

As for Watkins, what more can you do then score a hat-trick in front of your watching international manager?

Whilst there is a debate to be had about Watkins, Ivan Toney, who is currently banned, and Callum Wilson.

Villa’s man up top is miles better than Eddie Nketiah, so if the Arsenal man gets picked ahead of Watkins, then it is a joke.

As for Ramsey, he is slowing starting to make his way back after picking up an injury in the summer, but with Crystal Palace star, Eberechi Eze recently picking up an injury, then that should surely open the door for Villa’s very own to earn his maiden call-up.
