Jacob Ramsey left the Under 21s Euros earlier this week with fears over an injury and, following scans, the full extent is finally known.

Aston Villa will be gutted to have learned that Ramsey is facing up to ten weeks on the sidelines. His injury has been diagnosed as a broken metatarsal.

This is reported by The Athletic who have added that the 22-year-old will now miss the beginning of the 2023-24 season. Villa take on Newcastle on August 12th and will have to compete without their young talent Ramsey.

As with a metatarsal, it is likely best to allow the bone to heal and therefore Ramsey won’t be making any remarkable recoveries anytime soon.

The injury came at a horrible time, as Ramsey will miss the England Under 21s European Championship final against Spain on Saturday; a game that would have been the biggest of his career so far.

What is a metatarsal break?

A metatarsal break is a fairly serious blow, and the injury can break dependent on which metatarsal is broken. The metatarsal bones are the bones of the forefoot which connect the toes to the foot.

It is a fairly serious injury, as Manchester United fans learned as Lisandro Martinez suffered the same fate.

The symptoms of the break is severe pain and swelling, with the best course of action to completely rest the foot. Keeping weight off the area and not doing exercise is key in recovery.

Therefore, it is unlikely Ramsey plays before September and could make his return in time for a Europa Conference League debut.

However, he will need to be wary of returning too quickly as to avoid re-aggravating the break which could worsen the injury.
