Aston Villa and Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez is the world’s number one.

That was proven once again when Aston Villa’s star man collected the 2024 Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday evening.

It was fitting that Martinez collected the Yashin Trophy in Paris because Argentina’s World Cup final win over France still stings that nation’s supporters.

The 31-year-old, who also won the Copa America this summer for the second time in his career, was booed as he walked down the red carpet with his wife.

But, by the end of it all, he was all smiles because he was collecting the award for the best goalkeeper from his fellow countryman Lautaro Martinez.

Martinez was a key reason behind Villa reaching the Champions League for the first time in decades and he remains strong in between the sticks for the Midlands side.

Unai Emery’s men are sitting in the Premier League’s top four, but are also top of the Champions League table after three matches.

But Martinez’s highlight of the year would have come in the summer when he lifted yet another Copa America trophy to continue his nation’s dominance on the world stage.

Martinez took to Instagram to write this message to fans after receiving the award.

“Eternally grateful to receive this great award,” said Martinez.

“Thanks to all the people who helped me win again this very important prize,” he added as he tagged in his wife, family members, the Argentina national side and Aston Villa.

Martinez might be this marmite-like figure from outside of his own walls, but inside them, he is one of the most popular.

Of course, it’s understandable why neutral fans are divided about him because his antics can rub people up the wrong way.

But those who know him well, appreciate him and many of them sent messages via Instagram after he picked up his individual prize.

Lionel Messi wrote: “Congratulations to all the winners and nominees of the Ballon d’Or 2024,” added with a picture of Martinez collecting his award.

“Especilly to Dibu (Martinez). What a great (player). Another award for the best goalkeeper in the world.”

Alexis Mac Allister added: “Congratulations, Dibu”, whilst Emi Buendia called him “The best in the world” and Enzo Fernandez added “We have the best of all. Congratulations, friend.”

Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez added: “Congruatlions, my friend. Best goalkeeper in the world. Well deserved.”

Amadou Onana wrote: “Best in the world.” and Ian Maatsen called him “Top”, with Diego Carlos telling his Villa teammate: “You deserve it, Brother.”
