Former England star, Gary Lineker has taken a swipe at Micah Richards about his Aston Villa career while on Match of the Day this weekend.

It is safe to say that Micah Richards isn’t remembered fondly for his spell with Aston Villa after signing in 2015.

Compared to now, things couldn’t have been more different. Nowadays, under Unai Emery’s management, the Villans are sitting pretty in third place in the Premier League.

This season, they are still fighting on three fronts with the Europa Conference League and in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

According to FotMob, Villa have 13 wins from a possible 20 while they have only lost four, at the time of writing.

This is in stark contrast to the Villa of old when Richards was made captain following his signing from Manchester City.

Gary Lineker on Micah Richards at Aston Villa

It is safe to say that his signing wasn’t a success and in fact coincided with the Villans’ worst spell in recent memory.

Despite having been a part of the Villa squad for four years, he only managed to accrue 31 appearances, according to Transfermarkt.

This has prompted Gary Lineker to take a swipe at the former Man City man while presenting Match of the Day this weekend.

On that, he said: “The Premier League winter break means a shorter show. It’s a Saturday night debut for Glenn Murray, alongside Micah Richards. Three games and 45 minutes coming up. A bit like your Aston Villa career, Micah.”

The former Villa man reacted in complete shock by simply saying: “Wow!”

It was a hilarious and very unexpected moment that seemingly came out of nowhere given the reaction from Richards.

The irony is that most Villa fans will more than likely agree with the sentiment behind what the former England striker is saying.

Given the pedigree that the former City man came into the club with, many fans expected much better from him. Injuries heavily contributed to his lack of game time and eventual retirement from football.

In his time with the club, fans were frustrated that he hadn’t left despite not playing but that is all but forgotten now.

It has been many years since Richards retired and with his step into punditry, he has become more popular at Villa Park.

The joke from Lineker was well received by the former Villa man and also took a lot of fans by surprise when he began the show with it.
