Villarreal defender Pau Torres has been on the brink of a move to Villa Park for a week now, but finally appears to be on the way to Birmingham.

Torres has been a name known to English football fans since his brilliant performance in a Europa League final against Manchester United a few years back.

Now he is set to link up with Unai Emery, who was his boss at Villarreal, in what is a huge upgrade for Villa ahead of European football this season.

Terms for the transfer of Torres have been agreed, with a £35million fee expected for the centre-back.

The length of contract has also now been revealed, as Fabrizio Romano explains that Torres will sign a five-year deal with the club.

This is yet another piece of excellent business from Villa, who continue to sign players who wouldn’t be out of place in a big six side, following the arrival of Youri Tielemans on a free.

Torres spotted flying to Birmingham

Torres was a favourite of Emery at Villarreal, with the two clearly eager to work together once again. Emery had previously praised Torres highly, calling him “amazing” back in 2021.

The 26-year-old defender was a top target for the Villa boss as he looks to build a squad capable of improving on last season’s seventh place position and, of course, a squad capable of going far in Europe.

Torres has now been seen making his way to Birmingham as he prepares to complete his transfer to Villa.

Villa will be delighted with their imminent new signing, as the defender had previously been linked with Bayern Munich, showing just how good Torres is.

Torres elevates the defensive standards at the club and has impressive on-ball abilities which will benefit Emery’s side’s ability to play out from the back.

Torres has made more than 170 appearances for Villarreal and was part of the Spanish team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
