One former Aston Villa star has returned to the management fold as he takes over his nation’s international side.

Villa have boasted many legends over the years. From modern-day heroes like Jack Grealish to the recently passed Gary Shaw, these players will live long in the memory banks of the Villa Park faithful.

One star who was a catalyst behind Villa’s success in the 1990s was Dwight Yorke. The striker played nearly 300 times in Claret and Blue and netted 98 goals.

His biggest feat at the Birmingham outfit was when he helped the side lift the League Cup in 1996, Villa’s last major trophy.

Since retiring in 2009, the striker has dabbled in management and has now made his return.

The former Villa striker took his first step into management in 2022 when he took over Australian side Macarthur.

Here, he lasted six months before he left in January 2023 with 10 wins in his 19 games in charge.

Since then, he has been out of work but has now made a return to his native Trinidad and Tobago to take charge of the national team.

“I am proud and privileged to receive the honour of leading the Trinidad and Tobago national team,” said Yorke.

“The opportunity to work with this talented, close-knit group of players is something I look forward to.

“Having helped Trinidad and Tobago to the semi-finals of the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2000, captained the side at the 2006 World Cup and been assistant manager, my love and commitment to my national team is well documented.”

Yorke is just one of many former Villains who are going into management. While his career in Australia may not have gone to plan, he now has a chance to take on a job close to his heart.

Football for many players is not just a job but their life so it is great to see many former Villa players staying in the industry after their retirement.

Hopefully, Yorke can get the island nation off to a good start and repeat the success he had in 2006 when he helped guide the country to the World Cup.
