Aston Villa enter race for Maguire after Mings injury blow

Aston Villa have entered the race to sign Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.

Harry Maguire looks close to joining West Ham United in a £30 million deal, but Aston Villa could be poised to hijack the Hammers’ move for the centre-back, as reported by Football Transfers.

With Maguire yet to agree personal terms with West Ham, there is a window of opportunity for the Villans to swoop in and snap up the 57-cap England international for themselves.

Unai Emery will be exploring the possibility of a deal following the injury sustained by Tyrone Mings in Villa’s opening Premier League clash with Newcastle United. The full extent of the damage to Mings is not yet known, but as he was stretchered off at St James’ Park it was clear he could be set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

Villa won’t officially launch a move for Maguire, though, until the severity of Mings’ injury is known for a fact.

Aston Villa a strong option for Maguire

As for Maguire, a move is exactly what he needs, as his career has stalled at Old Trafford. The 30-year-old centre-back has fallen out of favour with the Manchester United fans, and has tumbled down the pecking order under Erik Ten Hag.

He needs regular football if he is to retain his England place, and he won’t get that with the Red Devils this season.

Maguire is a player short on confidence, but he still has the quality to shine at Premier League level. He was previously described as a “remarkable” player by then-Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers, and he excelled for Manchester United in the first couple of campaigns following his record-breaking £80 million move, quickly earning the club captaincy.

Maguire would be an ideal replacement for Mings, and would be given the platform to rebuild his career with Aston Villa.
