Argentina duo Angel Di Maria and Lisandro Martinez have both reacted the same way to a post from Emi Martinez following yet another international trophy win.

Whilst Aston Villa pair Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins suffered Euro 2024 final heartbreak on Sunday night, Emi Martinez lifted the Copa America trophy in the early hours of Monday morning UK time.

Argentina faced Colombia in the final knowing they had the chance to overtake Uruguay and become outright record-holders for number of Copa America wins with 16, as well as win their third major trophy in a row.

Martinez kept yet another clean sheet – meaning he ended the tournament having conceded just one goal – as an 112th minute Lautaro Martinez strike ensured Argentina won back-to-back Copa America titles.

Emi Martinez labelled ‘best goalkeeper in the world’ by Argentina team-mates

Martinez made four saves in the game and was his usual imperious self before being awarded the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award and lifting the Copa America trophy.

The Villa stopper took to Instagram following the win to post an image of himself draped in the Argentina flag holding his two children with the caption: ‘The final is played with the heart’.

One thing no one can deny that Martinez has heart in abundance; his passion endearing to supporters of both Villa and his country.

A hero in his homeland for his penalty shootout heroics to win the 2022 World Cup final against France among countless other displays, Martinez’ team-mates were quick to respond to his Instagram post.

Angel Di Maria responded with what everyone was thinking, as he commented: “Best goalkeeper in the world.”

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez – who was also crucial to Argentina’s solid tournament – echoed the sentiment of Di Maria, commenting: “The best in the world.”

The fact that Martinez has now won three consecutive major tournaments at international level is one thing, but what is most remarkable is he has only lost two games for Argentina in his career.

The 31-year-old must feel invincible when he plays for his nation and his supreme confidence is evident as he defends the Villa goal.

Not only do Martinez’ international exploits raise the profile of Villa as a club, his experience of these sort of occasions will only help them as they approach a season in which they will compete in the Champions League.

In Martinez, Unai Emery knows he has a player with a real winner’s mentality and that can only be a good thing.
