Sir Alex Ferguson felt that Aston Villa played well despite a 5-1 opening day loss to Newcastle United.

Fans were left shocked as the Villains were smashed at St James Park, after coming into the game with optimism.

Goals from Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali, Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes condemned Villa to their heaviest opening day defeat since 1951.

The only positive to take was a debut goal from Moussa Diaby. A wonderful volley leaving Nick Pope standing still.

Former Manchester United manager, and Premier League legend, Ferguson, had his say on the Villains’ start to the season.

What has Sir Alex Ferguson said?

While on NBC Sports’ coverage of Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers, he was asked which team had him most impressed.

Not sure anyone could of predicted his answer: “I watched Aston Villa and I can’t believe the score line.

They played fantastic football and just lost to bad goals.”

This comes as a shock to all involved, especially Villa fans who weren’t best pleased with their team’s performance.

Manager, Unai Emery, wasn’t happy after the game and held a different opinion to the Scotsman.

He said: They [Newcastle] are a very physical team and when they are scoring the first goal their transition is very dangerous.

“In the second half after they scored it was the moment we didn’t react good. 5-1 is a little bit more than we deserved. They deserved to win, but not like that.”

Sir Alex felt that Villa had potentially lost the mental side of the game, as well as on the pitch: “You can play teams off the pitch and not score – that’s what Aston Villa did.”

Sir Alex has high hopes for the Villains as they look to put the pre match optimism into action.
