Unai Emery shares worrying Emi Martinez injury update after Aston Villa loss vs Chelsea

Unai Emery has now provided an update on Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez after he went off at half-time in the 3-0 loss to Chelsea.

It’s now eight games without a win in all competitions for Aston Villa, who were beaten by the far superior team at Stamford Bridge.

The visitors set the tone for a poor afternoon when Jaden Philogene was dispossessed by Marc Cucurella deep into his own half, as the Spaniard crossed for Nicolas Jackson, who finished superbly past Emi Martinez.

Enzo Fernandez then grabbed a second for the hosts in the first half before Cole Palmer made sure of Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa with a peach of a strike.

For Unai Emery and his players, it was a very disappointing afternoon, while Martinez going off at half-time would have been a huge cause for concern.

In the defeat to Chelsea, Martinez was culpable for multiple errors. For the first goal, he arguably should have done more to stop Jackson’s shot from going in.

He was also lucky not to concede a second to the Senegalese striker when he passed the ball straight to him without looking, however, he managed to recover to smother his shot.

When the world’s best goalkeeper, Martinez, is making errors, that’s when there is something wrong and he looked as though he was struggling with a knock in the first half.

As a result, the Argentine was replaced by Robin Olsen at the interval, with Emery since revealing an update on the 32-year-old.

Emery claimed he didn’t know what the exact extent of the injury was but he did confirm it was in his hand, which could be bad news for Villa.

Martinez injury could further derail Villa’s top-four

Villa dropped down to 12th in the Premier League after their loss to Chelsea and at the time of writing, are currently five points adrift of Manchester City in fourth.

At this stage of the campaign, it’s still a recoverable position to be in but, their form needs to turn around very soon, otherwise, their chances of Champions League football could be derailed.

Following their trip to Stamford Bridge, Villa face clashes against Brentford and Southampton, two sides they’d expect to beat in top form.

Currently, every game is hard for Emery’s men and an injury to Martinez could make it even harder to enjoy another successful campaign.

So, with that said, Villa will be praying that the injury to Martinez isn’t serious because not having their world-class shot-stopper available could be detrimental.
