Aston Villa secured a late draw against Liverpool on Monday evening, seeing Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville left elated by Jhon Duran’s equaliser.

Jhon Duran stole the headlines in what was Aston Villa’s chance to secure Champions League football, as the Colombian netted a late brace to claim a point against Liverpool.

It was Villa’s last game at Villa Park in the 2023/24 campaign, with a win having the chance to confirm a fourth-place finish, seeing a draw putting control into Spurs’ hands.

Things could have been better for Villa, who were hoping to seal their fate in the top-four before the final day of the season however, the game could have also gone a lot worse for the hosts.

Gary Neville hilariously celebrated Jhon Duran equaliser against Liverpool

In the Sky Sports Monday Night Football studio for the blockbuster fixture were Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, who watched on as Villa bounced back to deny Jurgen Klopp a win in his final away game as Liverpool boss.

As Duran dramatically slotted home the equaliser in the 88th minute, Neville was seen running around the studio celebrating the goal in front of Carragher, with his Manchester United ties enjoying the Reds’ denial of three points.

When quizzed about his decision to celebrate the goal as if he were a Villa fan, Neville said he ‘enjoyed’ the Colombian’s late leveller.

“Enjoyed it, particularly when Liverpool concede late on.”

Many Villa fans shared a similar reaction to the goal to Neville, who was thrilled to see his former rivals drop points late on at Villa Park.

Jhon Duran saved Aston Villa against Liverpool

While the hosts would have wanted a win to secure Champions League football, a draw was a fair result considering how late it was left for the game to be influenced.

Villa created an abundance of chances to no avail throughout the fixture, with centre-back Diego Carlos having the easiest opportunity to score on the night, with his miss totalling an eyewatering 0.99xG.

The statistic meant that if the Brazilian was to have the opportunity 100 times, he would score it on 99 occasions, epitomising how frustrating it was to see Villa unable to find a way back into the game.

Duran required just seven touches, 11-minutes and three shots, via Sofascore, to put his stamp on the fixture, prevailing as Villa’s hero on what was a thrilling night to close the 2023/24 chapter at Villa Park.
