Aston Villa endured a frustrating afternoon against Bournemouth on Saturday.

In regards to the overall play, Unai Emery will be pleased with Villa’s performance, but at the end of it all, it yielded one point.

From conceding a 96th-minute equaliser to John McGinn having a goal disallowed in the first half, the luck certainly wasn’t on Aston Villa’s side.

The on-field referee and VAR had some big calls to make during the game, from Matty Cash’s supposed penalty foul on Antoine Semenyo to 13 yellow cards being dished out.

Some got more limelight than others, but that McGinn disallowed goal seemed to have been brushed under the carpet when watching the post-match analysis of the game.

But Ref Watch on Sky Sports discussed the incident and whether or not the right call was made.

Was the ball out of play for John McGinn’s disallowed goal for Aston Villa against Bournemouth?

It was adjudged that the ball went out of play when Ollie Watkins retrieved the ball and then fed a pass to his captain.

McGinn curled his effort into the top corner, before play was stopped and VAR overturned that call.

Stephen Warnock noted the reaction of the players and how he initially ‘wasn’t sure’ the ball had gone out of play.

But then, when he saw the ‘slow-motion’ replay, he thought there was ‘just enough daylight between the ball and the line’ and the right call was made.

“Reactions of players,” said Warnock. I saw the replay and was not sure it had gone out. But the beauty of VAR, this is where I don’t mind a slow-motion replay!

“There is just enough daylight between the ball and the line that you can see it. At normal speed, you don’t get to see that.”

What the Premier League said about McGinn’s overturned goal

Howard Webb is the main man at the top and is the referee’s chief. He has brought in a process where there is more transparency and communication to when decisions are made.

This was the case with McGinn’s disallowed goal, with the Premier League’s Match Centre explaining the reasoning behind the call on Twitter.

It is claimed that there was ‘factual evidence’ that the ball was out of play in the build-up to the goal, hence why VAR recommended for the goal to be disallowed.
