Paul Merson has had a pop at Emiliano Martinez after his error during Aston Villa’s 2-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
An off day of all off days. If Villa were still playing at the City Ground now, they would still be losing. It was just an abject performance from the team.
The tone was set pretty early when Ola Aina was given so much space on the edge of the area to shoot and power the ball into the back of the net.
Aston Villa just couldn’t get going, with so much possession, 74% of it in the end, only yielding three shots on target and very few were clear-cut chances.
You would have hoped that Unai Emery would have given the team a talking-to during the break and there would have been a response.
But Emiliano Martinez, days after winning the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d’Or, gifted Forest a second goal when Orel Mangala’s shot from distance was parried by Villa’s man in between the sticks, but it ended up going into the back of the net.
Former Villa man Paul Merson was critical of Emiliano Martinez on Twitter by stating that he tried to make something so simple ‘world-class’.
Martinez error
“That’s what happens when a goalie try’s to make a bred and butter save look like a world-class save,” said Merson.

Move on quickly…
We are still fifth in the table, with two favourable home games coming up in the Europa Conference League and the Premier League.
The home form can’t get any better, with nothing but wins being registered, and we need to keep it that way heading into the international break.
Forget about Sunday’s result and performance as quickly as possible because it just wasn’t good enough and responded by beating AZ Alkmaar and Fulham.
The away form still needs addressing because there is something missing, even though we are fifth in the league.
