Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has had his European Championship chances spoken about frequently during the international break, with pundit Steve Nicol now sharing his damning verdict.
While it would have been an honour for Ollie Watkins to represent England at Wembley against Brazil, it’s not been the easiest international break for the striker.
As a result of his display against the Selecao, the Aston Villa sensation has been scrutinised, particularly when it comes to his chances of making Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Euros this summer.
On paper, there wasn’t expected to be much of a debate as to whether Watkins would make the cut with him contributing to 26 goals from 29 appearances in the Premier League this campaign.
After a dismal night for all at Wembley against Brazil, it was unfortunately the 28-year-old who picked up the most criticism from the media as stepped in for Harry Kane.
Ollie Watkins received harsh criticism on international duty
It wasn’t a particularly bad performance for Watkins against Brazil, it was simply a night in which the Villa talisman received little service in his hope to make an impact.
The striker had a chance to score in the first half however came under pressure from the defence, seeing his effort go over the bar.
There was a lot of pressure on the forward to impress on the night as was handed a start in the absence of Kane, knowing that Ivan Toney was breathing down his neck to also prove his worth to Southgate.

The latest verdict on Ollie Watkins’ Euro hopes over Ivan Toney
While it was good for England, from a Villa perspective, you can’t help but feel for Watkins as he watched Toney take his chance last night.
The Brentford striker was impressive against Belgium, scoring a penalty and putting in an overall decent display in the 90 minutes he played.
Speaking in reaction to the two games England featured in on international duty, pundit Steve Nicol told ESPN that he now thinks Watkins will miss out to his counterpart when it comes to squad selection for the Euros.
“Before the Brazil game, I thought Watkins was absolutely ahead of Toney, but having watched both games, I think Watkins is a better all-round footballer, but I’d rather play against him than play against Toney.”
“For that reason, I’m going to go with Toney, which I wouldn’t have said if you’d asked me before the Brazil game.”
With 23 places rather than 26 up for grabs, it’s unknown whether Southgate will opt to take both Toney and Watkins, among others, to the Euros this summer.
It would be incredibly harsh to see the Villa man miss out considering his work and general improvement this campaign at domestic level however, many will know that the manager doesn’t always take club performance into account.
