Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has been in the headlines during the international break following his performance against Brazil, leaving some ‘worried’ for his future.

Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins has been nothing short of sensational for Unai Emery’s side this season.

Having netted 16 goals and recorded 10 assists in the Premier League, the Englishman has showcased just how much he’s improved the roundedness of his game in the 2023/24 calendar.

Unfortunately, not everyone has acknowledged just how much of a vital force the 28-year-old can be in attack, with him being heavily criticised by the media on the international stage.

Ollie Watkins was criticised for his England performance against Brazil

It was not only a difficult night for the Three Lions, who lost 1-0 to Brazil, but it was a disappointing night for Watkins.

The Villa talisman was handed the chance to prove his claim to be Harry Kane’s firm number two, starting the fixture in place of the Bayern Munich striker who was injured.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a game that allowed the Villan to even remotely show his strengths, with little service provided for him and the only chance he had in the game being well-defended.

The criticism that the forward has received has been surprising, considering just how much he’s impressed in the Premier League, which has left Aston Villa expert John Townley concerned over the Villa man’s Euro hopes.

Why Ollie Watkins could now face a challenge to make the Euros

Speaking on the Claret and Blue podcast, journalist Townley admitted why he is now “worried” for Watkins ahead of the Euros.

“I’m a bit worried for him because I get the feeling that Southgate is the kind of guy who would not judge club form.”

“I’ve said before, I think Watkins is my player of the season so far in the Premier League because he’s been so good, he makes such a difference to the team and his numbers are just incredible.”

“I feel like Southgate will judge players on what they do for England much more than what they do for their club.”

Townley’s anxiety surrounding the Villa striker is viable, particularly if Watkins’ competitor, Ivan Toney, takes his chance against Belgium this evening.

The journalist’s comments are also fair when reviewing the questionable choices Southgate has already made in his squad this year, with some players that have made little impact at club level still earning a call-up.

Everyone at Villa and in the Premier League knows just how potent Watkins is on his day, with the hope there that Southgate doesn’t see his Brazil display as his final audition ahead of the summer.
