Aston Villa made it three wins from four in the Premier League as Unai Emery’s side came back from 2-0 down to beat Everton 3-2.

Whilst going two goals down to the side bottom of the Premier League will frustrate Unai Emery, he will be pleased with the character shown by his Aston Villa players to turn things around.

To add to that, the victory saw a return to form for Ollie Watkins as the striker scored his first two goals of the season before Jhon Duran completed the comeback with yet another winning goal off the bench this season.

The signs are good for Villa as they sit in the fourth spot that they finished last season’s Premier League season and whilst Duran’s 30-yard winner will grab the headlines it was another player who continued his fine start to the new campaign.

Youri Tielemans currently one of the first names on the team sheet for Aston Villa

Youri Tielemans took a while to get going as a Villa player following his arrival as a free agent last summer but he has started this season really positively following the departure of Douglas Luiz.

The Belgian has started all four games under Emery so far this campaign alongside compatriot Amadou Onana and has provided quality on the ball alongside a newfound doggedness without it.

This was again the case against Everton, as Tielemans impressed throughout and his consistency has not gone unnoticed.

Martin Laurence of Who Scored posted on X following the game: “Really interesting to see what happens when Kamara is available again because, right now, Youri Tielemans is undroppable. Has been really good for most of the year.”

With Onana replaced at half-time after a difficult first 45 minutes, Tielemans showed class throughout alongside both the 23-year-old and then Ross Barkley.

In his time at Leicester City Tielemans was seen as something of a luxury player who did not concern himself too much with the defensive side of the game.

However, Emery has transformed the 27-year-old into an all-action midfielder who takes responsibility in deeper areas and is key to the way his Villa side build up.

This was highlighted by the statistics behind Tielemans’ Villa Park display on Saturday evening, as journalist John Townley drew attention to on X, posting: “Youri Tielemans continued his impressive start to the season with another top performance on Saturday night…

“125/138 successful passes, 90.6% pass completion, 28 passes into the final third, two chances created, 144 touches, five duels won, four ball recoveries.”

Next up for Villa is a trip to Switzerland to kick-off their Champions League campaign against Young Boys where Tielemans will hope to start his fifth consecutive game of the new season.
