Aston Villa’s dealings during the recent summer transfer window made a few headlines.
One of the reasons behind that was the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and Financial Fair Play (FFP) Aston Villa had to deal with.
It meant that the Midlands side had to be clever in the market and one of the deals concluded was striker Lewis Dobbin joining Villa from Everton.
On the other end, midfielder Tim Iroegbunam secured a transfer to Goodison Park.
Unai Emery already had two outstanding strikers on his books – England international Ollie Watkins and Colombia’s rising star, Jhon Duran, so the Dobbin signing wasn’t a necessity, but needed for the books.
The Aston Villa boss had a look at Dobbin in pre-season, but then proceeded to let him leave on loan for Championship side, West Brom.
Months into the new season, with Albion pushing for promotion after losing in the play-off semi-finals last season, life isn’t going to plan for the 21-year-old.

First off, whilst West Brom are one of the big boys in England’s second tier, in recent years, they haven’t been splashing the cash and manager Carlos Corberan has been restricted.
Whether it’s a valid reason or not, it has affected their style of play, in regards to not being an attack-minded team and actually pretty stale in their performances.
West Brom have scored 16 goals from 15 games this term – only five other teams in the division have scored fewer and two of them are sat in the relegation zone.
Despite that, Dobbin is struggling for minutes and has only been on the pitch in the Championship for 157 minutes.

Given that Dobbin has only started one game – and that was an EFL Cup match – then it wouldn’t be a surprise to hear that he hasn’t scored a goal yet.
Even with the Baggies crawling over the line in games and even loving a 0-0, on many occasions, Corberan isn’t just leaving Dobbin on the bench, but leaving it late to bring him on.
As a result, his stats don’t make for great reading, with WhoScored rating his performances at 6.07 for the season so far.
