In Aston Villa’s 0-0 draw against Everton, there was a mix of good and bad performances. It is safe to say that Diego Carlos was closer to the latter.

This weekend saw Aston Villa travel to face Everton at Goodison Park in a return to Premier League action after their FA Cup win.

It just so happened that the game against the Toffees happened to be Unai Emery’s first 0-0 draw in the Premier League.

There was some controversy regarding Alex Moreno’s opening goal which was eventually ruled out. It was adjudged by VAR that Leon Bailey was offside after a lengthy check.

On the day, Emi Martinez was on top of his game as he made two world-class saves to deny Dominic Calvert Lewin and James Garner.

Late in the day, Jhon Duran had a flicked effort fly narrowly wide which was the last big chance of the game.

Despite keeping a clean sheet in the end, we have picked out one player who didn’t perform at the top of his game on the day.

Defensively poor from Diego Carlos

It was a performance which is hardly going to be memorable to Villa fans such as the lack of attacking potency.

Given them having 69% possession, according to FotMob, they should have done more in front of goal. It is more frustrating given that the home side had the best chances of the game.

The defensive side of the game wasn’t so secure given that Everton created just 0.06 xG less than the Villans.

As a result of this, in Birmingham World’s player ratings, Charlie Haffenden has opened up about Diego Carlos’ performance.

On that, he said: “Unconvincing when Everton applied pressure but made some decent recoveries afterward. Made a silly foul in the attacking third, denying Villa a big chance, as well as a couple in the centre of the field.”

On the day, he was the lowest-rated player in a Villa shirt according to SofaScore. There are many reasons that this was the case.

He lost 86% of his duels as he only won one of the seven that he attempted. This resulted in him conceding two fouls.

This poor showing continues when you take into account that he didn’t make a single tackle or clearance across the 74 minutes he played.

Given the amount of possession his side had, Carlos was forced into making plenty of passes. With 40 accurate passes and a success rate of 85%, that part of his game was more positive.

It must be said that his performance wasn’t anything to write home about and he will hope to have a better showing next time out.
