Aston Villa have now received a promising update on Matty Cash’s injury status ahead of their Premier League clash against Wolves
Matty Cash was forced off with a hamstring injury in Aston Villa’s 2-0 defeat against Arsenal last month.
Lamare Bogarde has since deputized for the Poland international, with the 20-year-old starting in wins over Leicester City, Everton and Young Boys in the Champions League.
Bogarde did struggle in the win against Young Boys and was hooked off at half-time after making fewer touches than goalkeeper Emi Martinez.
Luckily, the experienced Cash could return to the starting XI very soon as he targets a return for their home tie with Bayern Munich a week on Wednesday.
Matty Cash targeting return from injury vs Bayern Munich
Cash was expected to return from injury for next weekend’s trip to Ipswich Town and with his recovery going well, that remains a possibility.
However, the real match he’s desperately targeting is a Champions League home clash against Bayern on October 2nd, with the 27-year-old sharing an update on his fitness via CBS Sports Golazo.
The former Nottingham Forest right-back expects to return to training next week and will ‘do everything’ to be fit for selection when Villa host the Bundesliga giants.
“I’m hoping to train next week because I can’t miss that Bayern Munich game,” Cash said. “I’m going to do everything I can to be back for that.”
Cash had his critics at Aston Villa last term, particularly for his poor defensive positioning, but there is no doubt the Englishman is an upgrade on Bogarde, who still has a lot to learn.
Cash return would be a boost to Aston Villa
On his day, Cash is one of the best attacking right-backs in the Premier League as he offers so much purpose and quality when flying forward down the right.
Across Europe’s top five leagues in the past year, the Villa star ranks in the top 11% for shots per 90, and the top 20% for touches (att pen), showcasing his threat as an attacking force.
Currently, Emery is relying on Bogarde to fill his void and his struggles on Tuesday night just showed how much the Villans missed Cash in that role.
Although he’s not top drawer defensively, he is a much more capable operator and what he brings in an attacking sense adds another dimension to the Villa attack.
Hopefully, Cash does get himself fully fit ahead of the visit of Bayern, so he can reclaim his spot at right-back.
