Ange Postecoglou made an interesting comment about Aston Villa after Tottenham’s 4-1 victory against Unai Emery’s team on Sunday afternoon.

It was an important match in the race for the Champions League places where Villa had the opportunity to extend their lead over Spurs to eight points.

But despite Morgan Rogers’ opening goal, Emery’s team were convincingly defeated and the gap to their opponents was cut to just two points.

After the game, Postecoglou said something about the difference between the two sides that Villa fans will probably disagree with.

What Ange Postecoglou said about Aston Villa

Postecoglou was initially complimentary about Villa but went on to suggest that his team have a higher ceiling.

“Villa are a good side. The first half was a bit of an arm wrestle,” said the Australian, via BBC Sport.

“They have a consistent level of performance. We have other gears in us which we showed in the second half.”

It’s hard to argue with his first comment. Villa are more consistent than Spurs, hence their higher league position so far this season and in the last.

But the idea that Spurs have more ‘gears’ to go into is interesting, to say the least. It was only a month ago that Villa beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Aston Villa still better than Tottenham despite result

Tottenham fully deserved all three points but they are by no means a better team than Villa all of a sudden.

The Villians’ poor performance does not reflect their standing within the game. Their fourth-place finish last season and current Champions League form does, however.

But things change quickly in football and, after Club Brugge in midweek, Villa will travel to Anfield to play against league leaders Liverpool.

A similar display – and result – would then call Emery’s side’s ability to compete in multiple competitions into question.
