Following this, Dominic Calvert-Lewin added the second after 50 minutes.

The game did fizzle out following this but Aston Villa grabbed a consolation in the 83rd minute through Boubacar Kamara.

Despite losing, Unai Emery will have liked the performance he saw from his defender, Pau Torres, who was brilliant.

Pau Torres solid as always

Playing the entire game, Torres was solid in defence and couldn’t do much to prevent either goal.

Two clearances, one shot blocked, two interceptions and a tackle showcase how strong he was according to SofaScore.

Most impressively was Torres’ on ball abilities which saw him dominant in possession for Villa.

126-touches for the Spanish defender was utilised well as he completed 103 passes.

This amounting to a really impressive 91% pass completion rate for Torres, along with one key pass too.

He also completed 70% of his long passes which is a great percentage for such high risk passes.

Proving to be a top quality signing

Torres is a player long known to have a huge amount of talent, but his ability has been really on show during Villa’s last few games.

Against Crystal Palace and Chelsea and now Everton, Torres has been a commanding force but also immense in building play out from the back.

Despite his high fee, he looks like a snip and probably would be worth double come the seasons end if he continues in this vein.

A player clubs like Manchester United turned down the chance to sign, but we imagine they will be ruing that now.
