Leeds United supporters can breathe easy now because Kalvin Phillips, who was touted to make a move to Aston Villa in the summer, has signed a new contract with the Championship club.

Following Villa’s promotion to the Premier League in May, Dean Smith needed a number of new players to fill up his already-thin squad, as the club ended up securing the services of 12 players.

At first, it seemed as though midfielder Phillips could have made the jump up to England’s top-flight by joining Villa, but a move didn’t materialise [Telegraph].

Fast forward to September and Leeds have announced on their official website that Phillips has put pen-to-paper on a new five-year deal.

Phillips will now focus his full attention on trying to help Leeds earn promotion to the Premier League as they currently sit third in the Championship table.

Last season, Villa triumphed by beating Derby County in the play-offs – The Rams had beaten Leeds to reach the final at Wembley.

Phillips will no doubt want to put things right this season, but it will be very interesting to see what happens if Leeds don’t earn promotion.

Given Phillips’ talents, many would back him to one-day play Premier League football, but if he can’t do it with Leeds then does that still open the door for Villa one day?

Of course, Dean Smith’s side need to maintain their own status in the Premier League, and whilst they have had an idffierent start to the campaign, the performances have been pretty healthy.
