Ian Taylor lauded Johnathan Kodjia, Jack Grealish and John McGinn on Twitter as Aston Villa beat Rotherham 2-1 in the Championship on Wednesday night.

It was a topsy-turvy game at the New York Stadium, with Tammy Abraham missing a penalty early on before Tyrone Mings was sent off after conceding a spot-kick which was converted by Will Vaulks.

Dean Smith’s side had to play the majority of the match with 10 men, but they stuck it through and scored two goals after the break to record a valuable three points in the race for promotion.

After the match, former Holte End favourite Taylor sent this message on his personal Twitter account as he hailed an ‘unbelievable team effort’ from the playoff contenders:

The victory moved Villa into fifth place and edges them even closer to secure a place in the top-six – something which looked highly unlikely only six months ago.

The return of Jack Grealish, who scored the winning goal, has played a part as he has helped his boyhood club to seven wins on the bounce.

At the weekend, they will take part in the biggest game of their season so far when sixth-placed Bristol City visit Villa Park for what is expected to be a mouth-watering encounter.

Three points against Lee Johnson’s men and Villa could potentially open up an eight-point gap to those outside of the play-off places with four games of the season remaining.
