Marvelous Nakamaba is one of a number of Aston Villa summer signings who is yet to debut for the club in a competitive match, but he now has an ample chance to end that.
On Tuesday, Villa will take on League Two side Crewe in the EFL Cup, with the potential that Dean Smith’s side could make a number of changes.
Midfielder Nakamaba is one of a number of signings yet to feature, with the others being Matt Targett, Ezri Konsa and Kortney Hause – though the latter was on-loan at the club last season.
Either way, if given the opportunity, it provides them with a platform to knock on Smith’s door to tell him that they are here and ready to push into the first-team fold.
Over the weekend, Villa recorded their first win of the new Premier League season when they beat Everton in front of their own supporters.
Now that the points are on the board, the mood around the place will have lifted and the players can relax a little because the pressure of having zero points on the board has now gone.
But if Smith does make a number of changes for the Crewe clash then he would want players to step up and provide competition for the first-team.
If Villa can get that going within their squad then it’ll only boost their chances of being more successful in the Premier League and finishing as high as possible.
Either way, it is highly likely that against Crewe, Villa supporters will get to see some fresh faces in action as they bid to progress to the next round of the League Cup.
The last thing Smith will want to see is a defeat against a lower league side when they have just picked up their first points of the season.
