It was a surprise to many when Birkir Bjarnason was released by Aston Villa in August, as fans would have been pretty interested to see what his next move was going to be.
Whilst the 31-year-old has a vast amount of experience under his belt, he has confirmed on his personal Instagram account, two months after his Villa departure that he has opted to sign Qatari-based side Al-Arabi.
This was the message Bjarnason sent from his personal Instagram account, as he can be seen donning the Al Arabi kit:
It perhaps could have been a little different for Bjarnason, who was seemingly attracting interest from elsewhere in England.
He previously told Icelandic outlet Fotbolti that Championship side duo Derby County and Stoke City were keen on his signature.
Villa beat Derby in the Championship play-off final in May, as Bjarnason would have been well aware of what Phillipe Cocus’s side are like, as well as what the second-tier of English football is like.
Bjarnason never really hit it off at Villa because he struggled to earn regular game time and didn’t really cement his place in the team.
It does seem now that this move to Qatar is more of a nearing retirement-like move, as Qatar will take centre stage in world football in 2022 when they host the first-ever winter World Cup.
