Aston Villa defender Neil Taylor was criticised by a number of Wales supporters as his side recorded a narrow 2-1 win against Azerbaijan on Friday night.

Ryan Giggs’ side picked up a much-needed three points against in front of their own supporters, but they made it hard for themselves as Gareth Bale had to net a late winner.

Wales opened the scoring before the half-hour mark, but after the break, Taylor’s poor pass in his own defensive half fell into the path of Mahir Emreli who slotted home.

It is fair to say that the Welsh fans weren’t too pleased that Taylor was at fault for that goal, as they were critical as to why he started the game.

Taylor has started every Premier League game for Villa this season, with Ben Davies, who ended up replacing his international teammate ten minutes from time, yet to start a league game for Tottenham.

From that, it is perhaps understandable why Giggs opted to start with Taylor, who from an individual standpoint has been producing strong performances for Dean Smith’s side this term.

Nonetheless, he put on a poor showing when he was given a chance and Villa fans will be hoping he doesn’t bring back to club level when he returns next week.
