Unai Emery’s ‘amazing’ Aston Villa star leads goal scoring statistic, not even a forward

One Aston Villa player leads the way in impressive goalscoring statistics on the international stage, and it’s not who you think it is.

The assumption would be that Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey would be the names linked with a potential goalscoring record. But Bailey has netted just five times for Jamaica and Watkins three times for England.

In fact, John McGinn, who is currently suspended, leads the way in this unique scoring record.

John McGinn leads way in unique Aston Villa scoring record

Per Aston Villa Statto, no player has scored more international goals whilst at the club than McGinn. The Scot, who has been hailed as “amazing” by Unai Emery, has 18 goals for his country, all of which have come during his time with Aston Villa.

The 29-year-old made his debut for Scotland in 2016 but didn’t find the net until after he had completed his move from Hibernian. Elsewhere on the list, Marcus Allback and Savo Milosevic come in second, having scored 12 goals for their respective countries whilst at the club.

Where does John McGinn rank in Scotland’s all-time list?

Amazingly, McGinn could become Scotland’s all-time record goalscorer if he continues playing for six or seven more years.

Presently, the Aston Villa midfielder sits 12 goals adrift of Kenny Dalglish and Denis Law. McGinn can level Ally McCoist’s Scotland tally if he finds the back of the net against Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

If he continues racking up appearances, there’s no reason he couldn’t threaten Scotland’s current record holders.

Aston Villa’s captain has endured a tough start to the international break after Scotland were beaten 4-0 by the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

“Overall, we will look back on it with so much to take from the game,” said McGinn (via The Daily Record).

“The scoreline is an embarrassing one for us. We are all experienced players, and we know coming to places like this, we are playing in European football, it’s not a surprise. When you get good spells in the game, myself, Christie, Shanks, one of them has got to go in.”
