Tim Sherwood thinks Matt Cash is playing as good as he has ever done for Aston Villa ahead of their clash against Nottingham Forest.

Unai Emery’s side are sitting fifth in the Premier League table heading into their all-Midlands clash against Nottingham Forest on Sunday at the City Ground.

Three points for Aston Villa and they move into the Premier League’s top-four, with a home tie against Fulham coming up next.

Tim Sherwood lauded Unai Emery for the job he has done at B6 and how he has improved many players, including Matty Cash, as he told No Tippy Tappy Football

It’s a return to his old stomping ground on Sunday because it was in 2020 when the 26-year-old switched then-Championship side Forest for Villa.

And now he is getting rave reviews for some of the performances he is putting in for a Villa team pushing for the Champions League.

Matty Cash praise

“He (Emery) doesn’t like them superstars,” said Sherwood. “He likes to develop players. He likes to be the underdog.

“Diaby has been an unbelievable signing for him. Douglas Luiz looks like he is top draw. Torres, with Konsa, it’s a lot better partnership than Konsa and Mings. He has a World Cup-winning goalkeeper.

“They have got the quality and they have got the depth. Matty Cash is playing better than he has ever played. He is bombing down that right-hand side. He has got a good balance. And it’s all done on the training pitch.”

Cover still needed for Cash

It wasn’t so long ago that Cash was picking up our Player of the Season award. He has been a brilliant signing for us and we are lucky to have him.

But he needs help and cover needs to be brought in during the January transfer window.

Some would argue why that didn’t come in the summer because that gap was there for all to see then, but for one reason or another, they decided against bringing someone in.

Perhaps Monchi is waiting for the right player rather than jumping at bringing any old face in, but with Villa set to go deeper in Europe, depth is needed for that right-back spot.
