It’s that time of the season when many are starting to debate who has been the best player in the Premier League.
Aston Villa are truly blessed to be in that argument because Ollie Watkins’ name has been mentioned by quite a few.
After Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Manchester United on Sunday, where Phil Foden netted a brace, Pep Guardiola came out and claimed that he is ‘the best player in the Premier League right now’.
But that was something Mark Bosnich respectfully disagreed with because he thinks it’s Ollie Watkins, as he told Sky Sports.
The ex-Aston Villa goalkeeper highlighted how the 28-year-old has the most goal contributions in the Premier League this season after his brace against Luton Town on Saturday.
That performance from the Euro 2024 hopeful resulted in legendary striker Thierry Henry analysing his game and sharing what he loves about it.
It’s understandable if someone goes on to win the league that they will be at the top of everyone’s list, but as of this moment, Mark Bosnich was sure to give Ollie Watkins his flowers.
Best player in the Premier League
“He is (Foden) definitely one of them, there is no doubt,” said Bosnich about the best player in the Premier League right now.
“I will show my bias, I would go for Ollie Watkins. The goals and assists he has got altogether are more than anyone in the Premier League thus far.
“There is still a long way to go, but Phil Foden is definitely in the argument. There is no doubt about that, two fantastic goals against Manchester United.”

Record-breaking numbers
Only two players in Premier League history have scored and assisted 15 each over the entirety of a 38-game season – Thierry Henry and Eden Hazard.
There is plenty of football to be played – 11 games – and a chance for Watkins to put his name alongside the elite because five more assists are what he needs.
One thing is for sure, he will end up scoring 20+, which would be a feat in itself.
But if Watkins continues in his current ways, then there is no reason why the team won’t beat Tottenham to that fourth spot because they are breathing down our necks.
