Comparing Pau Torres to Tyrone Mings as Emery faced with selection dilemma

Aston Villa look set to complete the signing of Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres, in what may be seen as a coup by Unai Emery, but what does that mean for Tyrone Mings?

There has been no shortage of interest in the Spain international in recent years, but Villa have allegedly secured his signature, and Emery is set to reunited with Torres, having coached him for two and a half seasons in La Liga.

It remains to be seen whether he will line up next to Tyrone Mings or replace him, given that both centre-backs are left-footed, but the 26-year-old arrives with a lot of European and international pedigree as a Europa League winner.

Mings has had a roller-coaster few years with Villa, having had the captaincy removed from him after a spell of poor form under Steven Gerrard, but has enjoyed a revival under Emery, and is playing at the top of his game right now.

How does Pau Torres compare to Tyrone Mings?

One noticeable difference between the two defenders is their ability on the ball. Torres ranks as one of the best defenders in Europe when it comes to passing and ball progression, whilst Mings is average in both regards.

Both players are also relatively poor in the air, and this could present a problem when facing more physical opponents in the Premier League.

Torres formed a strong partnership with Raul Albiol at Villarreal, with Albiol’s dominance in the air compensating for Torres’ weakness, and Mings may not offer the same security.

Emery may consider pairing Torres with Ezri Konsa, or Diego Carlos when he returns from injury, to try and find a better balance at the back than a potential partnership with Mings would provide.

Torres represents a statement signing for the club as they return to Europe, and Emery will hope that he can reach the same levels he displayed at Villarreal under his management.
