Aston Villa goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez has won the 2023 Yashin Trophy for being the best goalkeeper in the world last season.

In the Ballon d’Or ceremony, Aston Villa star, Emiliano Martinez was named as the world’s best goalkeeper.

There were some murmurs when Unai Emery came in that the number one may leave. That hasn’t been the case.

In the past year, he finished last season with 11 clean sheets and was a huge part of the team that won the World Cup.

Emiliano Martinez World Cup heroics

Despite losing the first game of the group stages to Saudi Arabia, Argentina rallied around to win the tournament.

This ultimately saw Lionel Messi win the Ballon d’Or and Martinez take home the Yashin Trophy.

In the quarter-final against the Netherlands, the Villa man made two saves in the penalty shootout to secure a semi-final place.

Then in the final, he made arguably the biggest save of all time. Randal Kolo-Muani went through on goal with seconds left and Martinez made a ‘world-class‘ stop.

Then in the penalty shootout, he made one save and used certain methods to put off Aurélien Tchouaméni.

An iconic performance which has seen him earn many plaudits.

Aston Villa’s best signing in recent times?

Aston Villa signed Martinez from Arsenal in 2020 after eight years and six loan spells away from the club.

The Argentine moved to the Midlands in a move worth £16 million and has been worth every single penny spent.

In recent weeks he has been valued at £26 million. As a result, he has increased by 63% value in three years.

The keeper signed a new deal in 2022 which will see him stay in B6 until 2027 and is currently on £120k-per-week.

A truly awesome signing and given the demand for goalkeepers in today’s market, Villa have got the best.
